School rules (pay attention)

Wednesday, September 9th, 2009

As I mentioned a couple weeks ago, everyone at Ped HQ shares nostalgia for that back-to-school excitement that used to fill us with a mix of nerves, sadness that summer was over, and elation at seeing our friends again. Those of you who are who involved in education—whether you’re a grad student, prof, or administrator—still get the thrill of the fall transition, while the rest of us simply live vicariously. To help recreate that zesty, anything-could-happen-this-year feeling, we’ve put together a cool-for-school list that also works outside the ivory tower. Take notes!

1) Book bag.

Let’s face it, 49 Square Miles’ Bookworm Slim Tote is in a class of its own. It’s roomy enough to accommodate files, notebooks, and even a small laptop, but it’s not so large that you’ll end up with a back problem from hauling too much across campus or to the office (allow us be your guidance counselor on this one). And the color! If you’re feeling sleepy in your seminar, just look at this beauty for a wake-up call.

2) Go-with-everything shoes.

When you need a shoe that you can wear day in and day out, whether you’re dolled up in a cute skirt or going casual in your sweetheart’s jeans, look no further than the Cydwoq Dance. This super easy flat is schooled in style, yet it’s comfortable enough to race through a mad dash when you’re running late for class or a meeting (and a bit of rubber on the leather sole will keep you on your feet).

3) BGOC (Big Gal on Campus) Boots.

Of course, your classmates and/or colleagues admire your smarts, but it doesn’t hurt to let them ooh and aaah over your style, too. Brains and beauty, yeah, that’s right, you’ve got it ALL going on—a point you can make clearly by skipping from class to meetings to lunch in Cydwoq’s Native Boots. These knockout lace-ups are at once classic and modern and will just get better the more you wear them. Turn those heads!

4) Chilly days scarf.

Fall weather is unpredictable. Warm days turn chilly and vice versa. Let the mercury rise and fall—when you’ve got a soft and cozy wool scarf from Sophie Digard, you’re all set for whatever the day brings. Hand-crocheted and Parisian chic, a Sophie scarf is the way to look beautiful and stay toasty! We especially love her Check Square design (although it’s so hard to choose—tomorrow we may have a new favorite)!

With these items in your wardrobe, you’ll be a walking lesson in style!

Argila lights our fire!

Monday, August 17th, 2009

At Ped, we’re always on the lookout for those rare designers who adhere to socially and environmentally responsible practices while making beautifully crafted items with scads of style. So, we went right over the moon when we discovered Argila, a wonderful shoe line featuring beautiful leathers and meticulous workmanship produced in designer Pep Monjo’s hometown of Menorca, Spain! We first introduced Argila to the Ped lineup last spring, and now we’re back with round two for fall. Let us just gush for a minute because these shoes and boots are truly something special!

Argila’s Maya is the holy grail of women’s shoes—a comfortable heel that’s conservative enough for the office but still lets you express your individuality (because who wants to be a corporate cog?). The leather is such a rich smoky grey, and it goes with absolutely everything. The t-strap is a classic style, but the details set this beauty apart, from the perforated leather at the front and back to the suede-wrapped heel to the circular buckle at the ankle. We can’t stop sighing.

Maybe your career let’s you be a little more badass—or maybe you like to shed your work clothes and get your ya-yas out after hours! If so, look no further than the Argila Katrine. This rockin’ ankle boot will make everyone around you catch their breath—it’s that stunning! We love the way the black leather suggests just a hint of bondage with the way it crisscrosses the taupe boot.

Speaking of beautifully cut leather, Argila’s Sadie is a veritable work of art with the way its chocolate leather radiates at an angle across the toe box and arches over the heel. It’s got a vintage feel but is thoroughly modern (check out the beautiful line of the heel). The schoolgirl look was never sexier!

Finally, Argila’s Josephine boot is perhaps our favorite black short boot of the season (although, admittedly, there are a lot of other beautiful ones at Ped). Again, it’s Argila’s attention to detail that sends this knockout over the top. We are especially smitten with the lace-less brass rivets running up the front of the boot—so very cool!

Such smoldering styles coming out of Spain! Argila es muy caliente!

Ped fans, don’t forget there are just two days left in Ped’s Bag Sale. Tote one of our Cydwoq, 49 Square Miles, or Jutta Neumann lovelies away while you can because they’re back to full price after August 19!

New Chie Mihara! Don’t wait ’til tomorra!

Tuesday, July 28th, 2009

At Ped, we love a long, luxurious summer as much as anyone, but we get pretty excited when fall starts to feel just around the corner. One of our first indications is when the upcoming season’s shoes start arriving at the warehouse—it’s so much fun to open the boxes and feel the “wow”!

Our current queen of “wow”? Chie Mihara! Based in Spain, Chie knows how to take vintage romance, spice it with old-school sex appeal, and turn it all into a wearable shoe that will have every eye in the room admiring your lovely feet. Chie Mihara heels charm with the most beautiful leathers and interesting details but never at the expense of comfort.

And this season, Ms. Mihara has outdone herself. We just got in our fall styles, and each and every one made us swoon. See for yourself! Here are just a few of Ped’s latest from our lady of Spain:

Drink in the loveliness of Chie’s Nerine! We took a poll at Ped HQ, and the vote was unanimous: none of us has ever seen a go-with-everything shoe that’s quite so pretty and flirty and unusual! The elephant grey suede is easy to wear, but the sweet floral detail makes this heel a head-turner. Never a more gorgeous Mary Jane than Nerine!

When Ped’s Laura saw Chie’s new Saura, she said, “It must be mine! After all, it rhymes with my name—it’s meant to be!” And we have to admit, the design is everything she likes: feminine without being fussy, striking in its color combination, and drop-dead sexy. The subtle leather embossing and the mix of the deep purple toe with the tan body and brown heel make the Saura a knockout. Lace it up with the grosgrain ribbon tie, and, well, “sexy secretary” has never looked sexier!

Get ready, this fall black is back and better than ever. Witness Chie’s sweet and girly Piet ankle boot! Although we love Chie’s way with color (nobody better), the woman also knows exactly what to do to make a black heel stand out from the crowd. The gently pleated leather on the toe and ribbon tie at the ankle send this boot into the stratosphere of style! So saucy!

Those are just three of the sweethearts in Ped’s fall Chie Mihara lineup, and we honestly can’t pick a favorite among them. They’re all stellar! Ms. Mihara’s shoes usually fly out Ped’s door, and we never know whether or not she’ll be able to fulfill a reorder (given the time and craftsmanship that go into each shoe, it’s often not an option). So word to the wise: snag your size while you can.

From the Seine into a sea of sandals…

Saturday, March 14th, 2009

Well, I’m back at Ped HQ, and I’m happy to report that, as usual, I had a complete blast while working hard in Paris! A few notes about what you have to look forward to next fall and winter: The “in” colors are cool tones—greys, ranging from graphite to elephant grey, and blues, running from slate to cobalt to teal. And good news! Black is the new black! The style trend dominating Paris is the boot—both short and tall—worn all seasons of the year. It’s a look I personally love. I think a breezy summer dress paired with chic boots is so fresh! Stay tuned because new Fiorentini + Baker boot styles arrive in June. (Yippee!!!!) Plus, I’m excited about the amazing Cydwoq and Trippen designs coming for fall.

My favorite men in shoes: Rafi of Cydwoq, Michael of Trippen and Pierre of

My favorite men in shoes: Rafi of Cydwoq, Michael of Trippen and Pierre of Anatomica (which carries the best selection of Cydwoq and Trippen in Paris).

Of course, while in France I made time for a little personal shopping.

Gals, if you don’t already know about Cotélac and Noa Noa, you definitely need to acquaint yourself with these wonderful clothing shops the next time you’re in Europe! They are always at the top of my Paris to-do list. And, of course, I had to stop by Ladurée to pick up some macaroons for my sweetie! Terry is so terrific about holding down the Ped fort while I skip around Paris, eating Lebanese food, drinking espresso, and soaking up everything from shoes to architecture, that the least I can do is bring him his favorite treat!

When I got home, I discovered Ped transformed into Sandal Central! We have so many eye-popping new designs, and they are ALL so fabulous that I hardly know where to begin. But here are a few of my favorites (with more to come in a later post):

Oo-la-la, ladies, how sexy is Coclico’s Odalisk? Every time I look at this gorgeous heel (which is so, so soft to the touch), all I can think of is movie-star glamour! Wearing this suede beauty, you could truly stop traffic.

Next…

The Cydwoq Vintage Feel makes me feel like going on a romantic picnic on a sunny afternoon (and maybe turning a few cartwheels). This flat sandal captures the very spirit of summer! Plus, you have to love, love, love the orange insole—what a fun detail!

For those of you who like a more earthy look:

Trippen has wowed us again with the Curls sandal! The look is hippie-retro but with a modern edge (and, needless to say, it’s ultra-comfortable). The design of the leather is truly ingenious (notice how the braid running up the front organically emerges from the solid strap over the toe). Plus, we’re crazy about the fringed knot at the back, which is both functional and fun.

Now let’s all do a warm-weather dance to bring on spring! I’m in the mood to let my toes run free.

Fall 2004 fashion delights

Wednesday, October 6th, 2004

As the leaves are changing here in Seattle, don’t you just want to put on boots, wrap yourself up in scarves, and put on striped knee highs?? Yes, we are in Seattle…where the days will get shorter, rain will come indefinitely, and we will all hibernate….watch many movies, drink alot of wine, and try very hard to stay warm. I’ve been here 12 years and have realized the beauty of winter. Stay cozy. This means that I make sure that I have a good supply of water proof boots, cashmere/angora socks, a good rain hat (i never carry an umbrella), and a few bright colored scarves. I truly believe in wearing bright colors in such a grey environment. So many people wear black…..it’s depressing. Get over it and wear COLOR!! Ok, enough of this. I hope to bring my lil’ words of wisdom to this little blog of mine.
